Book the computer labs, round up the troops and prepare for the great online language competition..starting MONDAY.
Following the enormous success of the Vocabulary Olympics 2009, we’ve opened the competition up to the world!
The Language Olympics is a two week long competition aimed at motivating language students to learn essential vocabulary. The competition begins at midnight (NZ time) on the 9th of August, and runs through until midnight on the 22nd of August.
The competition is going to be hosted on Language Perfect and is proudly sponsored by the NZALT – the New Zealand Association of Language Teachers. Language Perfect is a non threatening online learning tool for mastering one of the building blocks of communication: vocabulary. Any school, anywhere in the world, can obtain free access to Language Perfect for the duration of the competition. Once your students have logins, they can compete from any computer with internet access, meaning that they can learn at their own pace and can extend themselves at home.
Students earn points by learning and revising words. There will be range of prizes for top students as well as spot prizes. Every student with more than 500 points (Approx 4 – 10 hours learning) earns a certificate to be presented in assembly!
Here is feedback we received from Chris Cheyne, language teacher at Gore High School last year:
- "I cannot believe the great things this competition is doing.... building a bit of team(school) spirit as we try to up our ranking by all pulling together, building a bit of classmate rivalry as they try to outdo each other and then there is the inter-form rivalry where they don't want the younger ones to beat them!!! Plus, on top of that, they are learning PRESCRIBED vocab in a way that is fun!! AWESOME!!!"
